Radiologist Assistants

  1. An individual must have a current Maryland license as a radiographer before the individual may apply for a licenseto practice radiology assistance.
  2. A radiologist assistant may only practice under the supervision of a Maryland-licensed radiologist or Maryland-licensed radiation oncologist.
  3. A licensed radiologist or licensed radiation oncologist may not employ or supervise an individual practicing radiology assistance without a license.
  4. An individual may not practice, attempt to practice, or offer to practice radiology assistance in Maryland unless the individual is licensed to practice radiology assistance.
  5. Unless authorized to practice, a person may not represent to the public by title, description of services, methods, or procedures that the person is authorized to practice.
  6. Any person who practices without a license is subject to a civil fine of not more than $5,000.

The applicant shall complete an applicationsupplied by the Board and:

  1. Be of good moral character;
  2. Be at least 18 years old;
  3. Pay the application fee;
  4. Successfully completed and graduated from a radiology assistance education program that is recognized by ARRT, and successfully completed coursework that leads to a baccalaureate degree or post-baccalaureate certificate;
  5. Has passed the examination administered by ARRT;
  6. Has current registration/certification as a radiologist assistant with ARRT;
  7. Has a current Maryland license as a radiographer;
  8. Completed a radiologist or radiation oncologist-directed clinical preceptorship; and
  9. Completed a criminal history records check.

The application process, on average, may take 3 ‐ 6 weeks. However, the process may take longer depending on the individual applicant's circumstances or if the individual does not provide the required documentation in a timely manner.

Complete and submit the Advanced Procedures Request Application. The application must be jointly submitted by the radiologist assistant and the radiologist or radiation oncologist.

Yes, the Board will accept documentation of cases submitted to the ARRT for registration as a radiologist assistant if the cases were performed within the 2-year period immediately preceding the date that the radiologist assistant submits the Advanced Procedures Application to the Board.
